William Alexander Johnston, son of Sarah Ann Tope and John Johnston, was born on 18 January 1841 in West Milton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio, and died on 25 April 1894 in Springfield, South Dakota. He married Mary Elizabeh Hoover, daughter of Jacob Hoover and Elizabeth Rosier, on 10 February 1866 in Fayette Co., Iowa. Mary was born on 25 April 1852 in West Union, Fayette Co., Iowa, and died on 11 December 1943 in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska. William's burial place is not known, but Mary is buried in Burlington, Colorado.

William and Mary had 10 children:

1. Clarence Madison Johnston was born on 15 August 1869 in West Union, Fayette, Iowa, and died on 23 October 1943 in Rapid City, South Dakota. He married Alice Frances Cole on 18 November 1891 in Tyndall, Bon Homme, South Dakota.  Alice was born on 19 August 1867. Clarence was buried 23 October 1943 in Tyndales, Bon Homme Co., South Dakota.
2. Jacob Hoover Johnston (Johnstone) was born on 19 October 1871 in Fayette Co., Iowa, and died on 20 September 1938 in Bagley, Clearwater Co., Minnesota [note 1]. He married Jessie Blanche Maxwell Sinnard on 22 December 1898 in Yankton, South Dakota. Jessie was born 8 February 1881. Jacob was buried 24 September 1938 in Wilson Cemetery, Bagley, Minnsesota.
3. John Wilbert Johnston was born on 25 December 1873 in West Union, Fayette Co., Iowa, and died in 1883 in Fayette Co., Iowa.
4. Everett Ellsworth Johnston was born on 7 September 1876 in Fayette Co., Iowa, and died on 8 December 1955 in Burlington, Boulder Co., Colorado [note 2]. He married Jennie Elnora Derby in 1904 in Yankton, South Dakota. Everett is buried in Burlington, Kit Carson Co., Colorado.
5. Sanford Perry Johnston was born on 14 March 1879 in Fayette Co., Iowa, and died on 10 July 1954 in Denver, Colorado. He is buried in Burlington, Colorado.
6. Martha Elsie Johnston was born on 10 February 1882 in Kingsbury Co., South Dakota, and died on 18 April 1951 in Los Angeles, Los Angles Co., California. 
She was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery on 20 April 1951 [note 3]. She married William Patrick Hanrahan. He was born 14 July 1878 and died 24 June 1955. Her death certificate says she was divorced.
7. Alice Adeline Johnston was born on 11 November 1885 in Kingsbury Co., South Dakota, and died on 3 December 1953 in Hartington, Cedar Co., Nebraska. She married Ralph Morten on 23 April 1906 in Burlington, Colorado. Ralph was born on 3 November 1881.
8. Ethel Claire Johnston was born on 30 August 1887 in Kingsbury Co., South Dakota, and died on 13 February 1974 in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska. She married Arthur Freeman Eastwood about 1928 in Douglas Co., Nebraska. Arthur was born on 10 July 1888. Alice is buried in Hartington, Nebraska.
9. Ina Hazel Johnston was born on 19 February 1890 in Bon Homme, South Dakota, and died on 12 February 1960 in Costa Mesa, Orange Co., California. She married Frederick Henry Teman on 21 October 1911 in Burlington,  Colorado. Frederick was born on 6 May 1889.
10. William Byrnes Johnston was born on 5 November 1892 in Tyndall, Bon Homme Co., South Dakota, and died in September 1985 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  William was instutionalized much of his life and died in the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo, Colorado. He was diagnosed there with Klinefeiter's Syndrome.
